Sunlight Labs Congress Connector

Sunlight Labs Congress is a public resource website for understanding and tracking the U.S. Congress. Use Domo's Sunlight Labs Congress connector to retrieve data about activity in the U.S. Congress, such as legislation, hearings, roll call votes, and more. You connect to your Sunlight Labs Congress account in the Data Center. This topic discusses the fields and menus that are specific to the Sunlight Labs Congress connector user interface. General information for adding DataSets, setting update schedules, and editing DataSet information is discussed in Adding a DataSet Using a Data Connector.


To connect to your Sunlight Labs Congress account and create a DataSet, you must have a Sunlight Congress API key. Currently Sunlight Congress's API registration page is down. We are working to figure out how to get around this situation. 

Connecting to Your Sunlight Labs Congress Account

This section enumerates the options in the Credentials and Details panes in the Sunlight Labs Congress Connector page. The components of the other panes in this page, Scheduling and Name & Describe Your DataSet, are universal across most connector types and are discussed in greater length in Adding a DataSet Using a Data Connector.

Credentials Pane

This pane contains fields for entering credentials to connect to your Sunlight Labs Congress account. The following table describes what is needed for each field:  




Enter your Sunlight Congress API key.

Once you have entered valid Sunlight Labs Congress credentials, you can use the same account any time you go to create a new Sunlight Labs Congress DataSet. You can manage connector accounts in the Accounts tab in the Data Center. For more information about this tab, see Managing User Accounts for Connectors.

Details Pane

This pane contains a single menu from which you select a report.




Select the Sunlight Labs Congress report you want to run. The following reports are available:


Returns legislation in the House and Senate back to 2009. Updated daily.


Returns current committees, subcommittees, and their membership. 

Floor Updates

Returns to-the-minute updates from the floor of the House and Senate.


Returns committee hearings in Congress. Updated as hearings are announced. 


Returns current legislators' names, IDs, biographies, and social media information.

Upcoming Bills

Returns bills scheduled for debate in the future, as announced by party leadership.


Returns roll call votes in Congress back to 2009. Updated within minutes of voting.
